Bio
The first installment of “Uses for Wood” was formed in the summer of 1998 by original members Colin Murphy, Miah Cawley, and Jake Schultz. Many jams later, Colin met Ann Arbor singer/songwriter Gannon Alexander while auditioning for fiddle player opening in Gannon’s then current project “Blue Arbor”. When “Blue Arbor” split, Gannon and Colin founded the second phase of “Uses for Wood” and set out to provide the greater Detroit area with some much needed lively acoustic jams. Blending soulful original music and choice covers incorporating soulful melodies, lush harmonies, and ripping solos, they received immediate recognition as one of the best area acoustic acts. Since their first collaboration, Colin and Gannon have continued for three years running playing countless shows as “Uses for Wood” in addition to frequently teaming up with legendary local Detroit rockers Lance Larsen, Nino Dmytryszyn, and Jim Latini as the “Real Live Players”. In that time, they have turned out an album for each of the acts listed above in addition to a children’s album for an Ann Arbor school. Recently, young singer and resonator guitarist Lucciana Costa has joined forces with the group to contribute spectacular vocals and solos to their unique sound. Lucciana is the granddaughter of jazz great Eddie Costa and has been performing since age thirteen. She and Colin had previously played together in the Ann Arbor alt. Country group “Smithville,” and now continue their collaboration. With the recent addition of Lucciana “Uses for Wood” has added diversity and warmth to an already rich sound. “Uses for Wood” is also joined for select shows by one of the hottest rhythm sections around, featuring John Latini on bass and Jim Latini or Teddy Ribbons on drums. Already popular in local music scenes, these talented musicians round out the group’s impressive sound and energy. From small acoustic venues as a duo, or a trio with Gannon, Colin and Lucciana, to the full-blown five-piece entourage, “Uses for Wood” is bringing the house down. The feedback from these shows have been nothing less than overwhelming. With every performance delivered with the energy of a freight train and with their own brand of on the edge roots/blues/folk/rock/Alt. Country or whatever they are calling great music these days. These guys are no less than the real thing! Also joined by John Latini for select shows |
